Fuentes

Zapatillas

Shoes

I bought these shoes in Paris, on Champs Elysees. I had spent the morning walking all over Paris, from the Arc de Triumph to the Eiffel Tower (only up to the first platform – I wanted to save some for later) and then back to Champs Elysees with such sore feet I was (almost) happy to pay the 120€ for these shoes.

The other night I was walking home in these very shoes. A bit drunk. When the best idea occurred to me: The walking font. It works the same way as the fonts in Word but for walking. If you are with a group, or by yourself and you are a bit bored you can chose a walking font. The walking font is just like a type font but for walking. The possibilities are infinite.

For example the Kung Foo font, the Groucho Marx font, the tired font. You could easily divine people’s moods from their walking font. The tired font, the grumpy font, the happy to be alive font. I do have some ironing out to do. For example how do you do the font in bold, underlined or italics? But I think the idea has potential.

Pods Four

Textura

Texture

These pods hang in bunches from trees. They are a rich red brown colour. The path at the park where I found them was dotted with the little black seeds. Each pod has only two seeds inside. They are surprisingly heavy. These pods have such volume, they look very strong, but when you get closer you can see that they are very fragile. They have a wonderful texture that reminds me of the skin on workers hands.

Pods Three

Rubies

I found these three weeks ago. Now that I have the Utebo lesson behind me I always look for the trees, sometimes it is difficult to find the source. I finally did after two weeks of scanning the ground. Again they came from trees alongside the road, but this time the seedpods were more hidden. These pods are beautiful objects, they look like expensive gems. The bright red seeds, contrasting with the sombre dark brown, nestled among three wings are stunning.

Pods Two

Viento

Wind

These seed pods are beutifully fragile, they are so fine yet suprising strong. The light shines through them and they make a wonderful rustling sound in the wind.

Joder/Fuck

Amsterdam

Amsterdam

This long weekend Dan and I were going to Amsterdam. This trip had been planned long in advance. We were packed and ready; I even had special face cream for the cold. We were going to see my exhibition, walk along the canals, visit the Anne Frank house (I was going to buy her diary again ‘cause they put a special Anne Frank house sticker on it) go to the Van Gogh museum, eat in the Jewish quarter, buy thermal underwear in Tchibo, buy books in English at American Book Center. Generally pass nice time together in a fantastic city. There are certain pairs of things that go together, for example:

Cigarette – Lighter
Toothpaste – Toothbrush
Hangover – Headache
International travel – Passport
Glove – Hand
Knife – Fork
Condom – Penis
Internet – Computer

Can you guess which pair was incomplete?

Pods One

No encontré ninguna.

Footsteps in Utebo

I found one of these pods when I was walking to work in Utebo last year. I saw one the ground and was amazed by its tiny beauty. I picked it up and began scanning the ground for others. I didn’t find any. The next day that I had Utebo work I excitedly got off the bus and began scanning the ground again, this time I found three!!! For the next two weeks, two days a week, Mondays and Wednesdays I found three more each day.

The following it week it dawned on me that they must be coming from somewhere. That day I looked up at the trees growing along the Avenue and lo and behold they were full of these beautiful pods. I jumped up and down in a burst of delight, then noticed people were looking at me strangely, so I got a grip and put as many as I could into my sunglasses case. Now I have them on my work bench. Small reminders that no matter how advanced we are technically, we are no match for nature's creations.

Hojas

Tan distintas y tan perfectas. Tan elaboradamente protegidas y decoradas pese a ser unos objetos funcionales.

Autumn
Autumn is one of my favourite seasons. I like that the world seems to be on fire. The trees bursting into ostentatious flame, one last dance with their leaves before they go bald and loose them all. I also like finding the different seed pods that the trees offer up. So varied and so perfectly formed. So elaborately protected and decorated for such functional objects.

Rubias

Pelo

* ¿Cómo se llama una rubia con dos neuronas?
* Embarazada.

* ¿Qué tienen en común OVNIS y las rubias listas?
* Oyes hablar de ellos pero nunca los ves.

* ¿Por qué escaló la rubia el muro de cristal?
* Para ver lo que había al otro lado.

Hair

One thing that has always pissed me off is blonde jokes. For me, a natural blonde, they aren’t very funny. Why do my fellow blondes and I have to be more stupid than the rest.
Research undertaken at the University of Paris X-Nanterre has demonstrated that the mental performance of men drops when they are dealing with a blonde. This is apparently because they believe they are dealing with someone less intelligent, buying into the stereotype of the dumb blonde. Uh huh.
I am not going to give any examples of intelligent blondes, I don’t need to justify our intelligence. Here are three examples of the jokes that make me angry.

* What do you call a blonde with two brain cells?
* Pregnant.

* What do UFO's and smart blondes have in common?
* You keep hearing about them, but never see any.

* Why did the blonde scale the glass wall?
* To see what was on the other side.

Girl from Qatif

Flightless

Birds for me are a symbol of freedom, they can fly, the can touch the sky and they can escape by flapping their wings. This bird has been squashed under the wheels of a car. This woman has been crushed by lack of Justice. As in her country there is no freedom for women, there is no escape as there are no legal avenues that guarantee this basic human right:

A 20 year old Saudi Arabian gang rape victim has been sentenced to 200 lashes and six months in jail after appealing a judgment which originally ordained she be given 90 lashes. Her sentence was increased by the judges in punishment for “trying to influence the media against them”.

Her seven attackers who raped her 14 times also had their sentences increased. They were initially 10 months to five years in prison. Their new sentences range from two to nine years. The victim who was 19 at the time of the rape has been sentenced for violating Saudi Arabia’s laws which forbid unrelated men and women to associate with one another.

The judiciary in Saudi Arabia is appointed by the king and has wide discretion in handing down sentences. Often there is inconclusive evidence and many times the defendant is left unrepresented. Rapists can receive no punishment all the way up to the death penalty.

The victim’s Lawyer Abdul Rahman al-Lahem has been suspended from defending his client, has had his license to practice law confiscated and has been summoned to a disciplinary hearing later this month (November 2007) for playing his part in focusing media attention on the injustice of the case.

Sweetcorn

I am many things but a tin of sweet corn isn’t one. Neither do we have anything in common. The only thing you could say, if you didn’t know how to speak well is the colour yellow. For my hair. A few weeks ago I read The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon. The main character dislikes the colour yellow. One of his reasons is for the colour of sweetcorn which is indigestible and therefore there is no point in eating it. But I like sweetcorn and will keep eating it.

Soft rain

Piedras

Stones

This summer when my sister was in Spain a friend planned a trip San Sebastian. It is a beautiful city, I liked its long narrow streets, the tapas, the cleanliness of the city and the smell of the ocean. The Concha didn’t impress me at all, for me it is a dirty beach, small, full of people and boats discharging their contaminants into the water.
But the best part of San Sebastian for me is not the Concha, it's the works of Chillida, the churches, the soft rain, the new buildings mixed in with the old. I loved these stones. All are different, all formed by human hands but as if they had been formed naturally and now all are a part of the sea.

Pinceladas

Raindrops

I took this one rainy afternoon last winter. There are a bunch of trees on Duquesa Villahermosa. When it rains the bark changes colour from various shades of bone grey to vibrant greens and whites and oranges, like magic. The bark has a beautiful painterly texture. These trees are the advantage of a rainy day.

Humo

Lentejas quemadas

Hoy he quemado las putas lentejas.

Burnt Lentils

Today I burnt the fucken lentils. There is nothing worse in the world than smelling smoke tainted with what you are cooking, well there are worse things; for example waking up next to your dead partner, loosing an arm, being homeless etc. But today, when all that occupied me was cooking the lentils to perfection, stirring them at regular intervals, having the smell of them fill the kitchen and thinking how great it would be to eat them after days of eating rubbish, then to find the pot expulsing bursts of smoke ended my morning in a fit of bad temper and anger at the world.

The not quite empty bowl

Migas

Crumbs

These are bits of bread left over bread from our day, we cut five pieces for lunch and ate three, we cut two more for dinner, giving a total of four and ate two. These two pieces plus the third of the leftover baguette make me feel guilty at the waste. In NZ we don’t usually buy baguettes; we are more accustomed to buying loaves of bread that last about three days. These loaves contain more or less 20 slices of bread which we make into toast or sandwiches. For three people (my mother, my father and I) it can be too much bread. Last time I was home I asked Dad why they don’t make half loaves, he said he didn’t know but it would be fantastic if they did. But sometimes a half baguette or loaf (if they made it) isn’t enough; you never know.

Just hanging out in a meat shop

I saw this head in Madrid the first time I was there. I was a vegetarian for 12 years and in this moment I still didn't eat meat. When I saw this it disgusted me and it made me angry at the indignity that the animal had to suffer. But now I think this picture has something amusing about it.

The Louvre

When I took this photo my friend asked me why I was taking it in black and white, I can't remember my answer and now I really don't know why I wanted to get rid of all the colours. On Wednesday 31st of October Aloma Rogdriquiz is going to present her first book Paris tres. This book captures the colours of Paris and its atmosphere and is well worth reading.

Flores de piedra

Notre Dame

Notre Dame

I have visited Notre Dame many times. The first time I saw it I cried. When I was studying art history at school I never thought I would get to see those flying buttresses in person. It was a cold rainy night sometime in a Parisian winter. I was with Daniel, Aloma and Barreiros. Dan and I were spending our first weekend in Paris together. We stayed at Aloma´s place. We couldn’t decide what to do that night. I had to choose. So I chose the Notre Dame. I had to hide my tears, I didn’t want to appear as an over emotional freak. I took this photo last year when I was in Paris with some friends. We hadn’t seen each other in more than a year. We visited all the Parisian sights again, together. This is a detail on one of the main doors.

Mirror

Driver's licence

I took this photo after a lunch in Pasta Nostra. I like road signs I don’t know the meanings of. I am also fascinated by reflections. I cannot drive in Spain as New Zealand and Spain don’t have a bilateral agreement on the exchange of driver’s licences. Right side driving takes some getting used to. Sometimes when I am very tired I think we are going to crash into the oncoming car as my mind reverts back to the left side of the road.

Ruinas

Roma

Rome

I was in Rome at the time of the conclave in 2005. This ment there were even more people around and that I couldn´t see the Sistine Ceiling. There was more than enough to see without this sight. Rome´s ruins are truly impressive as are the buildings which have withstood the passing of the years. One of the things that amazed me about Rome was that you could touch the buildings, go in them, breath their air.

In NZ the oldest house is the Kerikeri Mission House, built by John Butler in 1821, and the Mission's Stone Store built in 1832, is New Zealand's oldest stone building. These buildings are treated revently and parts are closed off from the public to protect them. I have visited the Stone Store and I only have the memory of standing in front of it trying to smile into the sun while my photo was being taken.

Rome of course has had a longer history. One of the things that surprised me the most was that there were ruins just lying around, like this one. Its existence acknowledged but not exulted, in the middle of a field, overgrown with grass.. There are enough other ruins that this one gets to hang out in a field with the grass and the birds.

Rangitoto Island

Rubbish Day

This is a dead possum washed up on a beach in Tasmania, I hoped it came from New Zealand when I took this photo. The possum is a huge pest in NZ, they destroy our native bush and the habitats of many native animals. The Australian Brush tailed possum was introduced into NZ in 1837 to establish a fur trade.

While the possum survives in Australia and is protected because of its low numbers which result from, having to fight against Dingos, bush fires and less palatable vegetation. It has however flourished to pest levels in New Zealand, having no natural predators and consuming large amounts of lush vegetation.

My parents live on a farm. My father bought a humane trap that snaps and instantly breaks the neck of the possum who is lured by a peach (the smell entices them, this is the kind of lascivious animal it is, daring to eat a peach). The trap looks like an oversized yellow bucket. My father catches one every time he sets the trap but he can only catch a few a week as the rubbish is collected only once a week and he has to freeze the bodies - in an outside freezer, we don’t have our ice-cream next to Mr dead Possum – to maintain a healthy home environment.

New Zealand now has an estimated 70 million possums that eat 20,000 tonnes of vegetation a day. This is devastating our bush and native animals. The damage to native forests can be seen all too clearly in many areas. Possums ignore old leaves and select the best new growth. Possums compete with native birds for habitat and for food such as insects and berries. They also disturb nesting birds, eat their eggs and chicks and may impact on native land snails.

Dairy and deer farmers have the added worry of possums spreading bovine tuberculosis. The beef industry is one of our biggest money earners. Possums can be dangerous if encountered and are known to attack. There is now a flourishing possum fur industry in NZ, the possums are killed humanely and the hunters are paid well. It has created a lot of employment in towns rife with unemployment. Possum numbers are not yet under control as the New Zealand conditions are so favourable the possum often breeds twice in one year, but this innovative industry is making a difference. Long live dead possums.

Windmills at sunset

Windmills enchant me. They are very industrial yet are simple, beautiful, lonely objects. This photo is like a dream/nightmare scape.

Hearts

Hearts

Hearts

Heart Shaped is a group of 31 hearts, one for each day of the month. This is a playful approach to the fact that you can change your heart, your lovers, your likes, and literally your physical heart in the society in which we live. Each day you can decide which heart you want to wear, how big it is and what it looks like.

Each heart has a fine silver base with a different heart attached to the front. On the back is a Velcro heart. The Method of interchange is very simple; you simple connect one of the hearts to one of the bases. The Velcro connects and provides a strong connection until the heart is changed again.

How this cat got his name

This little white cat with the sky blue eyes got his name one traumatic day. I had arrived home after my first visit to the Pyrenees. There were two kittens in the house. The little white one was the runt and the other one would pick on him, bite him and suck blood from his neck.

Just after arriving at the house I stepped backwards outside, not looking where I was going as I was continuing a conversation I was having. I stepped down onto the head of the little white kitten. It was one of the worst moments in my life. I felt something underfoot and then I saw a flash of white and spots of blood on the ground. The little cat ran into the hedge but was easy to catch. There was blood coming from his nose and mouth. His breathing was laboured and at one point he stopped breathing.

I collapsed into sobs in the kitchen. My boyfriend's father called his wife for medical advice, wait, was the advice. I went to look for flights back to NZ. My boyfriend was wearing a shocked expression, he couldn’t understand such emotion for one little cat. As I prepared myself for bed the cat wanted attention, but I couldn’t face it, the blood streaks on its face and the rattly breathing were too much for me to cope with.

The next day the cat was fine, normal, happy, even eating more than usual . He was named Lucky on account for his luck, his remaining alive and well against the odds. Lucky now has eight lives or less but as you can see he is sleek as only cats can be. I am always happy for his presence.

I have always liked the designs of tires. I understand that tires need traction and tire companies want to distinquish their products and invest enormous quanities of money in scientific investigations but what always surprises me is the beauty of the results.

Espacios

A wall without a floor

There are many gaps like this one in Saragossa. For me they are full of the lives of the evicted inhabitants, the colours they chose to paint their rooms, their likes, their time and memory. These spaces are like time in stasis, they have changed but are not completly finished with their past. They are spaces where my imaginaton wanders.

Piscina

Agua azul

Blue water

There is something about a body of water and sun, a feeling of magic, of possibilties. I grew up next to the sea and the colour of the water and intensity of the sun could affect my mood. There is always beauty to be seen in water.

One weary Saturday

After I had bought bread and pan au chocolate I came across this man. I took a photo then asked if it was ok. He got wearily to his feet and strapped on his too heavy accordion
and began to play. I felt terrible, I had interrupted his rest and I was more interested in taking photos in repose. I gave him two euros and he continued playing as I walked up the street.

A Dolls House

Imagine living in this house, you would have to control your diet vigilantly.

Bad News

Though I only ever bought one loaf of bread here, it´s a shame because this shop was across from a Martin Martin chain which has the worst shop assistants in the world. Every time I passed by this shop I would smile at its independant competition, now when I see it I feel a little sad.

The world of a short white coffee, easy on the coffee with cold milk

I was sitting with some pretty girls, talking and drinking coffee. This photo is the result of my empty glass. A delicate, ephemeral and precious world.
