Ruinas

Roma

Rome

I was in Rome at the time of the conclave in 2005. This ment there were even more people around and that I couldn´t see the Sistine Ceiling. There was more than enough to see without this sight. Rome´s ruins are truly impressive as are the buildings which have withstood the passing of the years. One of the things that amazed me about Rome was that you could touch the buildings, go in them, breath their air.

In NZ the oldest house is the Kerikeri Mission House, built by John Butler in 1821, and the Mission's Stone Store built in 1832, is New Zealand's oldest stone building. These buildings are treated revently and parts are closed off from the public to protect them. I have visited the Stone Store and I only have the memory of standing in front of it trying to smile into the sun while my photo was being taken.

Rome of course has had a longer history. One of the things that surprised me the most was that there were ruins just lying around, like this one. Its existence acknowledged but not exulted, in the middle of a field, overgrown with grass.. There are enough other ruins that this one gets to hang out in a field with the grass and the birds.
